Crippen News - October 2018

Legion Report
by Fred Lee (fotofred4u@q.com)

The William H Crippen Post 62 of Humboldt held their regular meeting on Monday, October 1, 2018. We had the salute to the Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance. Minutes and Treasurer’s reports were given and approved. Hans gave us a report on the Dinner Party from last month. There was no one reported on sick call. Jim Jarding was at home and Roger Begeman was in Bethany Nursing Home for therapy.
Commander Charles Dubbe had a thank-you card from Bob & Robyn Hanisch and passed it around to everyone to see.
Under old business, Fred Lee reported on the District meeting on Sunday in Hudson. Membership was one of the topics at the meeting. He also told the members that the new National Commander would be in South Dakota in November. He will be at a breakfast on Monday, November 5, at 7:30 am. There was some information about using the Legion float. Chuck added the Commander’s remarks regarding mentoring new members. He wants to contact every veteran living in Humboldt inviting them to join our Post.
After discussing our Dinner Party, we spent much of the meeting talking about fund-raising ideas.
There was some discussion on our Oratory program and fund raising ideas for it.
Before the meeting ended, Hans had his father’s Army registration for World War I that was passed around for everyone to see.

After these discussions, the meeting was adjourned.

Auxiliary Report
by Connie Lueth, Secretary
The Humboldt American Legion Auxiliary, William H. Crippen, Unit 62, was called to order Monday, October 1, 2018, by Vice President Dianne Struck with 10 members present.  The opening prayer was read by Chaplin Jean Erickson.  After our regular opening, the secretary’s report was read, amended, and approved.  With Sheryl Siemonsma’s absence, there was no treasurer’s report.
Sunshine Committee Chairperson, Dianne, reported having sent a Thinking of you card to Kristy Kaffar.   Get Well cards were sent to Sheryl, Pat Letcher, and Roger Begeman; and Sympathy cards were sent to Bob Hanisch for the losses of Dorothy (Hanisch) Gates and Vicky (Hanisch) Shaw.
VA and Community hours were recorded; and correspondence from District President Alice Upshaw was read.
Lorena Dubbe, our Veteran Affairs and Rehabilitation Chairperson reported that our unit is to host a Social Hour at the VA on October 20 at2:00.  There were no volunteers at that time; however, anyone willing to help, is invited to contact Lorena or President Donna Beck.
Lorena also said that the VA Gift Shop will be held the end of November, earlier than years previous; so gifts that members contribute must be brought to our November meeting, or the Veteran’s Dinner, or even the Soup n Pie Luncheon.  More suggestions for gifts include gloves, watches, wallets, throws, towel sets, travel mugs, flannel shirts, Patriotic shirts-m-xl; as well as, items that were mentioned last month—men’s sweats, also m-xl in size, sweat shirts for ladies with pretty pictures.  Lorena also said that members may donate cash if they don’t have the time or resources to shop themselves.  She will fill in with gifts that are needed.
Plans will be finalized next meeting for our Veteran’s Supper, which will be on Sunday, November 11th at 6:30 p.m.   Another volunteer will be needed to take Sheryl’s place since her knee will need more time to heal.  And we will also finalize plans for the Soup n Pie Luncheon November 17th at our next meeting.  Dianne will head the committee of three consisting of her, Connie Lueth, and Jackie Lofswold.

Jean led us in our final prayer. The meeting was adjourned.  Jean won the door prize.  Lunch was served by Connie Meyer and Sharon Rehfeldt. Dennis and Jean Erickson and Dale and Jackie Lofswold will serve next month.

Department Historian Fred Lee (second from left) was in Indianapolis recently at American Legion Headquarters where he attended a Historian’s workshop with other Historians from around the country. He is shown here with National Commander Brett Reistad, (center) and National Historian Fred Doten.
